Who does the Scrum Master Serve?

The Scrum Master serves:

  1. The Product Owner
  2. The Scrum Team
  3. The Organization

The Scrum Master serves the Product Owner in following ways:

  • Helps to maximize value by teaching and / or facilitating to order the product backlog.
  • Facilitates communication to ensure everyone is aligned on the Product Goal, Sprint Goals and the Definition of Done.
  • Supports the Product Owner in identifying and managing external stakeholders and dependencies that may impact the product.

The Scrum Master serves the Scrum Team in following ways:

  • Coaches and Facilitates the Scrum Team's self-organization, ensuring they have the autonomy to deliver high-quality work.
  • Helps the team follow Scrum practices and principles, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement and experimentation.
  • Helps remove any impediments or roadblocks that are preventing the team from meeting their goals, and protects them from external distractions or disruptions.

The Scrum Master serves the Organization in following ways:

  • Promotes agile values and principles throughout the organization, and helps stakeholders understand the benefits of a Scrum approach.
  • Facilitates collaboration and communication across departments and teams, helping to break down silos and improve cross-functional cooperation.
  • Acts as a change agent, advocating for continuous improvement and helping the organization adapt to changing circumstances and market conditions.
